Match report: Defeat at Carlisle

24 January 2023

Hartlepool United were unable to build on their rousing win over Rochdale after going down 3-1 at Carlisle United.

Goals from Morgan Feeney and Kris Dennis put the promotion-chasers two up and while Josh Umerah pulled one back, a second Dennis goal sealed the deal for the Cumbrians on 66 minutes.

Keith Curle made two changes to the side which defeated Rochdale at the weekend.

Jamie Sterry took a breather after coming through an hour at the Suit Direct Stadium, with Dan Dodds switching to right wing-back with Rollin Menayese coming into the centre of defence.

Mouhamed Niang also came in for his first start since the defeat at Swindon with Joe Grey moving down two the bench.

Pools were put under early pressure from the hosts, who were inactive at the weekend.

And they went ahead in the sixth minute.

A powerful Owen Moxen was deflected towards goal with Killip making a block, only for Morgan Feeney to prod the loose ball in from a couple of yards.

It was almost 2-0 in 18 minutes when Killip struggled to contend with a Jack Armer cross from the left but the keeper redeemed himself by making a great reaction save from Dennis onto his right stick before gratefully securing the loose ball.

But a second goal did arrive in the 26th minute.

Carlisle got Armer away again on the left to cross into the box, where Peter Hartley’s clearance only went as far as Dennis who converted comfortably into Killip’s left corner.

There was, however, a great response from Pools, who pulled one back two minutes later through Umerah's 14th goal of the season.

The striker intercepted a weak Moxon back pass and cooly shot past Tomas Holy from 15 yards.

Pools made a strong start to second half with a Jack Hamilton header bringing a good diving save from Holy.

But for all the promise there was no reward and Carlisle were soon back on top.

Pools somehow got the ball clear after Dennis looked certain to score from close in before Killip made an acrobatic save from a Guy shot from the edge of the box.

A third Carlisle goal looked inevitable and it came on 66 minutes when Moxon's cross from the right was headed home by Dennis from six yards

Curle introduced Grey for Niang at this point and the sub soon had a shot blocked as they chased an instant response.

However, the Cumbrians looked more likely to score and Pools were indebted to a magnificent Killip double save from Dennis and Senior.

Another away defeat for Pools was made worse was the sight of Menayese stretchered off at the end after he was dispossessed.
