Match Preview: Pools Head to Gillingham

12 January 2023

After bowing out of the FA Cup last weekend, Hartlepool United return to League Two action with a trip to Gillingham on Saturday (3pm KO). Buoyed by a trio of new signings, Keith Curle’s side will be going all out to get points on the board as we head towards the business end of the season.

The Opposition

Gillingham currently sit bottom of League Two, five points behind Pools and six points from safety. They've won just two league games this season, thought they did reach the FA Cup third-round before being eliminted by Leicester last week.

Their manager, Neil Harris, has formerly won promotion to the Championship with Millwall, and his side includes two new signings in Tom Nichols and Tim Dieng. Former Pools loanee Mikael Mandron leads the line for the Gills.

The History

This will be the 38th meeting between the sides, with Pools winning 11 of the previous encounters. Gillingham have won 16 times, and 10 matches have ended in a draw, including the game at the Suit Direct Stadium earlier this season.

Pools' last win over the Gills came in 2009 thanks to James Brown's solitary goal. Recently re-signed defender Peter Hartley played in blue and white for that fixture, though he'll miss out on Saturday due to suspension.

Team News

Two of Pools' new signings are available for the fixture, with Dan Dodds free to make his debut and Matty Dolan ready to begin a third loan spell with Pools. Hartley misses out after his aforementioned suspension, Alex Lacey and Tom Crawford are long-term absentees, and Curle's side are likely to be without Jamie Sterry and Mo Niang in the short term.
