In a game of few chances, Newport County claimed all three points with a late Micky Demetriou header.
In a quiet opening 20 minutes, Pools had the best of the possession. However, it was our visitors that had the first chance of the game, with Charsley seeing a close-range effort blocked.
Edon Pruti was booked after 27 minutes and Finney’s header were the highlights of the half for Keith Curle’s side, with Kemp lively but unable to find a breakthrough.
The second half saw Kemp at the heart of Pools’ good work. His one-two with David Ferguson saw him get on the end of a good cross, but it was high and wide.
With 20 minutes to go, Newport had their first shot on target. Charsley got a header away, but Stolarczyk was equal to it and the chance passed.
Minutes later, Pools had a good chance of their own. After a flick on from Clarke, Umerah teed up Ferguson but his volley was deflected behind.
As the game ticked towards added time, Lewis had a good chance for Newport, but Stolarczyk turned it around the post. However, the resulting corner saw Newport snatch three points at the death. Demetriou got to the corner first and his header floated into the back post.
Zanzala almost made it two with seconds to go, but the ‘keeper made a good save after spreading himself well.
Pools now turn their attention to Saturday’s home fixture with Walsall.
