Oldham Athletic claimed a 2-0 home victory over Pools, on the back of a 3-1 win on Boxing Day.
John Askey switched to a 4-3-3 system at Boundary Park, making one change in personnel as Louis Stephenson made his first senior start at right-back.
Oldham’s opener came on three minutes. Josh Stones, who scored two in the return fixture, beat the offside trap to latch onto Mark Kitching’s ball and slot home.
Pools were unlucky not to equalise on the half-hour mark, as Callum Cooke forced a save from the trailing leg of Matthew Hudson. Seconds later, Mitch Hancox’s cross was headed across the face of goal by Josh Umerah.
Towards the end of the first half, Umerah was tripped on the edge of the box. Cooke’s effort, however, was safely caught by Hudson.
James Norwood nearly doubled Oldham's lead after half-time, but the striker's first effort was blocked off the line before the second fell wide.
The introduction of Anthony Mancini on the hour mark inspired Pools to push forward. The midfielder twice tested Hudson, from very different distances, but neither found the net.
Umerah was forced off the pitch on 78 minutes after a knee injury. Pools' number nine shaped up to take a strike, but as it flew wide the striker went down injured.
With five minutes to go, Mike Fondop made it two for Oldham. The former Hartlepool man converted a header from Mark Kitching's corner to seal the result for Micky Mellon's side.
