Interview: Antony Sweeney post Oldham Athletic

26 December 2023

First-team coach Antony Sweeney provided his post-match verdict following Pools' 3-1 home defeat to Oldham Athletic on Boxing Day.

"We’re frustrated again. We’ve gifted them goals and struggled to test their keeper. We’re not going to win games of football when we concede sloppy goals every week. The goals were avoidable - we need to be much stronger defensively.

We’re not making excuses. We’ve known what the fixture schedule is - that Wealdstone game didn’t change anything. We had enough time to prepare for the fixture and we gave the lads work to do over Christmas.

It was disappointing that we couldn’t kick on after going 1-0 up early. Joe Grey scored a great goal but for whatever reason we didn’t push on and we fell apart at the back.

We can’t provide an update on Zak Johnson and Mani Dieseruvwe yet. With the time of year, it’s hard to get them properly checked out - we’re hoping to receive more news in the next week.

The biggest positive from today is probably Anthony Mancini’s return. He looked bright when he came on. We need to be very careful with him though because it was a bad injury and he’s a big player for us - we can’t afford to rush him back.

We've fought through tough times before, and now we need to turn our attention to Saturday's game to get back on track."
