Match Report: Pools Come From Behind To Beat Southend

19 August 2023

Charlie Seaman scored a stunning winner as Hartlepool United clinched their first away victory in the National League 3-2 at Southend United.

The on-loan defender scored a screamer in midweek with his right foot, but today it was his left foot after Pools came from behind twice.

Jack Bridge scored early for the Shrimpers, with Tom Crawford levelling with a great shot on 28 minutes, before Gus Scott-Morris restored the home lead, with Joe Grey equalising.

Askey sent out an unchanged XI for the fourth v fifth contest following Tuesday evening’s 3-1 romp against Maidenhead.

The manager’s only alteration was own the bench, where Kieran Wallace had recovered from a toe injury.

Pools went behind on five minutes as Callum Powell's cross from the left to the back post was nodded back by top scorer Harry Cardwell for Bridge to score from a few feet.

Pools soon grew into the game and midweek scorer Anthony Mancini was inches wide from outside the area with his left foot and was just off-target with a powerful header from the first corner of the afternoon from David Ferguson.

Poos though did pull level on 28 minutes through Crawford’s first goal of the season.

There was some nice interplay down the left side where the midfielder was afforded time and space to shoot. He duly obliged and found Collin Andeng Ndi's bottom-left corner with a 25-yard grasscutter.

Boosted by that goal, former Shrimper Chris Wreh went wide of the keeper’s left stick from the edge of the box while Seaman, scorer of a screamer in midweek, could only find the top tier of stand behind the home goal with his left foot.

Pools were so close two minutes into the second half when Manni Dieseruvwe's shot went narrowly wide of the goalie’s right from the edge of the area after fine work by Mancini.

Having threatened, Pools were soon on the back foot with Southend applying a period of intense pressure.

And it paid off with their second goal, while Pools were temporarily down to 10 men with Dieseruvwe coming off with claret coming out of his nose after being hurt in a goalmouth scramble.

Powell was again the supplier, this time with a cross from the left and right-back Scott-Morris scored with a stooping header.

While the hosts were still celebrating, Pools sent on Grey for Dieseruvwe.

And the sub scored with his first touch, smashing home after an assist by Chris Wreh.

It gave Pools a spring in their step, with Dan Dodds shooting just high with his left foot and Mancini hitting the side-netting with his own left peg.

But Pools did find the right part of the net in the 73rd minute and it was another beauty from Seaman.

He cut in nicely off the right and beat two home players and let fly from the centre of the goal with his left foot and found the goalie's bottom left corner.

There was a scare for Pools on 78 minutes when a Bridge cross from the left skimmed Joel Dixon’s bar.

Askey’s side should have wrapped it up on 82 minutes, only for Callum Cooke to wide with a glorious opening after good work by Grey.
