Match Preview: Pools Head to Southend

18 August 2023

After two home wins in a row, Hartlepool United are on the road again as they travel to Southend United on Saturday (3pm KO).

The Lowdown

Pools are looking for their first away win of the season after losing 3-2 to Barnet in the season-opener two weeks ago. The trip down south will be a further test for John Askey's side after two morale-boosting wins at the Suit Direct in the last week.

However, Southend will be in a buoyant mood after putting off-field matters aside to claim two wins from their first three games. Led by their Head Coach Kevin Maher, the Blues are currently fourth in the table, ahead of Pools on goal difference.

Last season, Southend finished eighth in the table, and their good start this season will be cause for optimism.

The History

The sides have met 48 times in the past, with Pools winning 13 of the previous encounters. Southend have won 25 times, while 10 matches have ended in a draw. Pools are without a win in the last four games against Southend, but in 2010, a Roy O'Donovan hat-trick saw Pools win 3-0 at home.

Current Pools coach Tony Sweeney has netted on two previous occasions against Southend, both in 2008.

Team News

Josh Umerah serves the second of his three-game ban against Southend after his red card against Gateshead. Kieran Wallace is continuing his recovery from injury, while Ollie Finney is also hopeful of being back on the pitch soon.
