Match Preview: Pools Head to Newport

11 April 2023

Still unbeaten under John Askey, Hartlepool United are looking to boost their survival hopes as they head to Wales for a clash with Newport County on Saturday (3pm KO).

The Opposition

Newport are 18th in League Two, eight points above Pools. Led by manager Graham Coughlan, the Exiles can seal their own survival with a win against Pools after a topsy-turvy season in the fourth division. Their side features former Poolie Omar Bogle in attack after the forward made his move to Wales last summer.

The History

The sides only met a couple of months ago, with Newport running out 1-0 winners at the Suit Direct. In all, Pools and Newport have met 47 times in the past, with Pools winning 12 games, the Exiles winning 22 games, and 13 matches ending in a draw.

Pools' last win over Newport came in March 2022, as goals from Luke Molyneux, Jamie Sterry, Neill Byrne gave Graeme Lee's side a 3-2 victory.

Team News

Jamie Sterry missed last weekend's fixture with an injury, and he'll be assessed this week ahead of the final run in. Matty Dolan is unavailable for the fixture, too, as he is currently on loan from Newport. Mo Sylla also returned to the side against Stevenage, appearing as a first-half substitute against the Boro.
