Match report: Defeat at Sutton

17 September 2022

Hartlepool United were defeated 2-0 at Sutton United after second-half goals from Will Randall and Harry Beautyman.

Pools started the game brightly with Tom Crawford central to their good play, but it was the hosts who had the first big chance of the game. Wilson got a shot away inside the box, but the post denied him and Pools cleared.

Good play from Umerah, McDonald, and Tumilty got Pools up the pitch, but it was goalless at half-time.

In the second half, Sutton pressed forwards and could have led through a close-range strike. Killip made a big save to deny the forward, but couldn't keep out the game's opener.

A cross from the right found Randall at the back post and the ball was tapped home for 1-0. Sutton pressed their advantage after the opener, and it was two not long later. Eastmond swung the ball into the box and, despite calls for offside, Beautyman's diving header stood.

Pools looked to hit back through substitute Jamie Sterry, but the 'keeper tipped it over. The chance was as close as Hartley's side came and the wait for the first league win goes on.

Pools XI: Killip; Menayese, Murray, Lacey (Hastie 68); Tumilty (Sterry 56), Crawford, Niang (Shelton 68), Paterson (Ferguson 56); Cooke, McDonald (Ndjoli 56); Umerah

Unused: Letheren, Oduor
