Match preview: Papa Johns action at Morecambe

20 September 2022

Tony Sweeney returns to the helm as Hartlepool United take on Morecambe in the Papa John's Trophy on Tuesday. Pools solitary win this season came in the competition, and they'll want to kick on after a change in management.

The Opposition

Morecambe are currently 23rd in League One after a single win this season, and they eventually triumphed in their first round match against Everton U21s in this competition after a penalty shootout.

Led by manager Derek Adams, the Shrimps side features familiar names from our north east neighbours in Connor Ripley, formerly of Middlesbrough, and Donald Love, formerly at Sunderland.

The History

The sides have met 11 times previously, with Pools winning six times, Morecambe winning twice, and three games ending in a draw.

The sides last met on the same matchday in the 2021/22 season. A Matty Daly brace secured a draw, with Pools then triumphing 4-2 in the subsequent shootout.

Team News

Jamie Sterry, Mika Ndjoli, and Josh Umerah have all shaken off knocks in recent weeks, so Sweeney has an almost-full squad to choose from. Club captain Nicky Featherstone remains sidelined.
