Match preview & insight: Colchester (a)

1 September 2022

Hartlepool United are looking to push on from Tuesday’s nights victory as Jordan Thornhill brings you the match preview and Jacob Hackett provides some inside Colchester knowledge.

The Opposition

Colchester sit 20th in League Two after one win, one draw, and four losses in their opening six games. Last Saturday, they fell to a 2-0 defeat to Tranmere, with former Poolie Josh Hawkes on the scoresheet.

The U’s Head Coach, Wayne Brown, had a squad including the experienced Alan Judge and two former West Ham players in Freddie Sears and Frank Nouble.

The History

This will be the 63rd first-class meeting between the sides, with Pools winning 20 of the previous encounters. Colchester have won 27 times, while 15 games have ended in a draw.

Last season, both sides won away from home. First, goals from Omar Bogle and Isaac Fletcher saw Pools win in Colchester in February. Then, in May, the U’s won 2-0 in the season finale at the Suit Direct Stadium.

Team News

Mika Ndjoli’s midweek brace puts the forward firmly in the picture for Saturday’s clash, while fellow attacker Josh Umerah will face a late fitness test.

Insight

Paul Hartley’s men travel to the JobServe Community Stadium on Saturday afternoon to take on Colchester United. Jacob Hackett spoke to U’s fan Elliott Wreford to get the inside scoop.

What are your thoughts on Colchester’s season so far?

E: “It has been a slow start to the season with performances being nowhere near good enough, apart from in the Carabao Cup.”

What are your thoughts on the manager, Wayne Brown?

E: “Brown ended last season in good form and kept us up fairly comfortably in the end, however, this season his tactics have been questionable with the style of play not suiting the players we have.”

Which Colchester players should Hartlepool supporters look out for?

E: “Noah Chilvers is one always to look out for, and new signing Matty Longstaff is likely to impress.”

What are your expectations for Colchester’s season?

E: “After the signings [we have made] in the final days of the transfer window, I am a lot more confident and I reckon we should be able to achieve a top half finish.”

Finally, what is your prediction for the result?

E: “My prediction for the game is Colchester 3-1 Hartlepool.”
