Match report: Pools defeated in Harrogate

15 October 2022

Hartlepool United were beaten 2-1 on the road at Harrogate after first-half goals from Alex Pattison and Jack Muldoon. Umerah scored in the dying embers, but it wasn’t enough as Pools made it two losses in two.

Pools started the game brightly, but the returning Jamie Sterry firing wide after good work in the middle from Mark Shelton. Josh Umerah had a sight of goal shortly afterwards, but he couldn’t quite squeeze it past the ‘keeper after Robinson’s pass.

Harrogate then fashioned a chance of their own, but Grant was denied by Killip. Paterson had a go for Pools, but minutes later, the hosts took the lead. Alex Pattison picked up on a loose balll and fired it beyond Killip. Straight from the kick-off, Pools fashioned a great chance for an equaliser, but Umerah’s strike narrowly missed the far post.

A free-kick from Ferguson whistled over the bar and Armstrong hit the post for Harrogate as the half drew to an end, but it was our hosts who got a breakthrough before the interval. Pattison’s cross found Muldoon at the back post and the forward nodded past Killip.

In the second half, Harrogate controlled most of the opening 10 minutes, but the closest either side came was Shelton’s long-range strike that Jameson palmed behind. After Shelton’s strike, Pools took control of the game, though clear-cut chances were at a premium.

Harrogate slowly took control of the game again as the clock ticked down, with Armstrong’s low strike well held by Killip after the forward’s mazy run.

After pressure from Harrogate at one end, Pools broke forwards and with five minutes to go, Umerah got one back. Callum Cooke brought it forwards and found Umerah, and the forward dinked it over Jameson for 2-1. As we entered added time, Umerah looked close to an equaliser, but his headed chance was wide and the assistant was already waving his flag for offside.

Pools now look towards the midweek Papa John’s Trophy fixture with Everton U21s.
