After their first win of the season, Hartlepool United welcome Carlisle to the Suit Direct Stadium on Saturday (3pm KO). Goals from Josh Umerah and Wes McDonald gave Pools a well-deserved three points on Tuesday, and they’ll want to build on their recent performances with another good showing at home.
Carlisle are currently 10th in League Two after four wins, six draws, and one loss in 11 games this season. They’ve drawn four and won one of their last five games, and they’re unbeaten since August 20th when they lost 2-1 to Stevenage.
Manager Paul Simpson has an experienced squad to choose from, including Gateshead College graduate Jon Mellish and top scorer this season, Kristian Dennis.
Now-Pools manager Keith Curle had a spell spanning more than 200 games with Carlisle, overseeing the Blues between 2014 and 2018.
The sides have met 108 times in first-class competitions, with Pools winning 37 of the previous encounters. Carlisle have been triumphant in 51 matches, while 20 games have ended in a draw.
Last season, Pools claimed four points from the Cumbrian side. At home, goals from Tyler Burey and Gavan Holohan saw Pools secure a 2-1 win, while the sides played out a 0-0 stalemate in the reverse fixture.
Keith Curle has never lost in the fixture, though his four wins and one draw came when he was sporting Carlisle colours. The interim manager will want to transfer that record into blue and white on Saturday.
As mentioned in Curle’s post-match comments, Nicky Featherstone, Mohammed Niang, and Jamie Sterry remain sidelined with injuries. Otherwise, the gaffer has a full squad to choose from, though he’s already showed that he’s happy to rotate depending on the opposition.
