Match Report: Pools Overcome Harrogate in the FA Cup

26 November 2022

VIBRANT Hartlepool United reached the third round of the FA Cup for the second season running after beating Harrogate Town 3-0.

A Callum Cooke free-kick and a Josh Umerah brace saw off their League Two rivals at the Suit Direct Stadium.

The performance of Keith Curle’s team was like a breath of fresh air and totally deserved their place in the hat for Monday’s draw.

Keith Curle made five changes for the FA Cup tie with Alex Cairns, Rollin Menayese, Clarke Oduor, Callum Cooke and Josh Umerah coming in to the starting XI.

Menayese’s return proved timely after a back injury to Euan Murray while Cairns, an emergency loan from Fleetwood, took over from first-round hero Ben Killip who was injured this week.

Cairns was a first-half spectator as Pools played with gay abandon.

Umerah was just wide with a 10th-minute header at the Town End from a Cooke cross, while the lively Jake Hastie had a shot blocked for a corner when he looked favourite to score.

Leading scorer Umerah then brought a flying save from Pete Jameson after good work from Cooke (before the keeper was forced to dive low to his left to put out a long-range left-footer from Hastie.

All that was missing for Pools was a goal but that came on 40 minutes.

Cooke’s positive run was ended when he was brought down on the edge of the box and he took the award himself, driving it low into the away net.

Referee Sam Purkiss designated a World Cup-like three minutes of added time and Pools utilised it by scoring again deep into that from the spot.

Umerah was in on goal when he was brought down by Joe Mattock, who having been yellow carded earlier was booked again and sent off.

Josh made no mistake from the spot, slotting his kick into the goalie’s bottom-left corner.

After the break, Pools were just as bright but could not get an early goal.

There was a first shot for Cairns to save on 54 minutes and he did it with aplomb from Josh Falkingham’s long-range effort.

The tie was sewn up with a third goal 20 minutes from time, with Umerah scoring his 10th of the season.

Sub Joe Grey played him in and the finish from the centre of the gaol was emphatic past Jameson.

The celebrations had barely died down when Town pulled one back through Josh Coley after the sub found himself unmarked in the area.

It was good to see sub Louis Stephenson come on and the young sub looked good both in defence and going forward.
