Academy pick up big win

30 November 2022

Hartlepool welcomed Huddersfield to Blackhall looking to make amends for an early season heavy defeat.

Joel white serving the last game of his three game suspension and Joe Kitching & Louie Stephenson called up for first team duty allowed opportunities for HCFE Players Luke Richards and Toby Crawford to make their first starts of the season alongside incoming Middlesbrough GK Shea Connor.

As the game started to settle down it was Pools who took the lead on 22 minutes with excellent work from the impressive Max Storey dribbling into the opposing 18 yard box and setting up Euan McBride to make no mistake from close range.

Pools extended their lead on 36 minutes when Trialist Ryan Wright pounced on a parry from the opposition goalkeeper after a fierce low drive from the edge of the area from Christian Lynn.

Huddersfield made 3 changes at the break. Pools made one with Cam Darcy heading off to join the 1st Team squad allowing the opportunity for U16 prospect Tye Grundle to make his debut.

Pools dealt a further blow on 55 minutes when Leo Robinson was brought down with a dangerous tackle that was lucky to escape with only a yellow card. Unfortunately Leo was unable to continue making way for another HCFE player Lynden Ferguson.

As the game headed towards the latter stages Huddersfield started to dominate and pulled a goal back from a cross from the left finding the attacker to stab home between two Pools defenders. Some emergency defending and some good fortune saw Pools claim the points.

Academy Coach, Ian McGuckin commented:

We were really keen to make up for the result we faced away from home earlier in the season and we worked hard all week to set up a game plan to give us the best possible chance of success and the lads executed it really well on the day.

The pleasing thing from today is some players had the opportunity to be involved in the first team squad allowing players from our partner programme with the HCFE to step up and be given a chance. Full credit to those lads who certainly did the college proud and more than contributed towards the result.
