Match Report: Pools conclude season at home to Colchester

7 May 2022

Hartlepool United's season came to a close with a 2-0 home defeat to Colchester United. Goals from John Akinde and Chay Cooper did the damage against a depleted Pools side.

Pools had a chance within a minute. Olomola was released down the left and his cross was smothered by Hornby before Molyneux could properly connect. From there, Colchester saw most of the ball and it was our visitors who opened the scoring. After Ben Killip closed the angle, the ball was pulled back to John Akinde. The forward made no mistake, smashing the ball into the net.

10 minutes later, Pools had a half-chance through Ferguson. The ball broke to the defender, but a block saw it turned behind. Openings for Molynuex and Sterry followed, and the latter was replaced before half-time with Ogle coming on in his place.

Pools started the second half brightly, but it was Colchester that got the next goal. Chay Cooper replaced Alan Judge at half-time, and it was the midfielder that picked the ball up 35 yards out, took a touch, and belted it off the post and in past Ben Killip.

Ferguson and Molyneux kept trying to create chances, but nothing was coming off for Pools in the final third. Bogle had a header that went wayward, Olomola smashed a strike into the side-netting, and Molyneux had a great strike saved, but still, it remained a barren day for Nelson’s side.

Molynuex saw another strike well saved by Hornby and Hull saw a header cleared off the line, but nothing would fall right for Pools. Attention now turns to appointing a new manager and building a competitive side for next season.

Pools: Killip; Hull, Liddle (Smith 73), Odusina; Sterry (Ogle 39), Crawford, Featherstone, Ferguson; Molyneux, Bogle (Carver 67), Olomola
