Match preview: The final one

5 May 2022

This Saturday, Hartlepool United’s 2021-22 campaign comes to an end as Colchester United visit the Suit Direct Stadium. After a solid league season and two good cup runs, the season closes with a virtual dead rubber between Pools in 16th and Colchester three places below.

The Opposition

Colchester are 19th in League Two, 15 points clear of already-relegated Oldham Athletic. They’ve won two of their last five games, defeating Newport and Bradford, and in all have won 13, drawn 13, and lost 19 games this season.

Wayne Brown is the side’s interim head coach, and he leads a side featuring former Brentford midfielder Alan Judge and former West Ham forward Freddie Sears.

The History

Earlier this season, Pools ran out 2-1 winners at the JobServe Community Stadium after goals from Omar Bogle and Isaac Fletcher cancelled out Noah Chilvers’ strike. In all, Pools have won 20 of the previous matches, lost 26 times, and drawn 15 times.

Team News

Graeme Lee’s team is still besieged with injuries, though Bryn Morris and Nicky Featherstone made their returns against Scunthorpe last week. Notable absentees are Neill Byrne, Gary Liddle, Isaac Fletcher, and Mark Shelton, though the latter may be fit after a bout of vertigo.
