Match Report: Pools draw with Stags

29 March 2022

Hartlepool United fought back from two goals down to draw with Mansfield at the Suit Direct Stadium. Goals from Joe Grey and Luke Molyneux got Pools back on level terms, though an injury to Molyneux sullied the fightback.

Pools started the game brightly, with Bryn Morris stinging the gloves of Bishop in the opening minutes. Then, Mansfield had a chance of their own, but smart stops from Killip kept him at bay. Mansfield did take the lead minutes later. Lapslie exchanged passes on the edge of the box and slid a smart finish under Killip.

After Murphy was replaced by Law in an early change for the visitors, they scored their second. A cross to the back post found Perch, bouncing off his head and somehow looping over Killip into the net. Akins had a chance for three, but Killip was once again equal to the strike.

As the second half seemed to be petering out, Pools sparked into life. First, Joe Grey collected Jamie Sterry's rebounded shot to reduce the deficit, before Luke Molyneux smashed home from the edge of the box to put Pools back on level terms. It was a remarkable turnaround for Pools and they were as shocked as anyone to go into half-time at 2-2.

The only real incident of the second half was a bad one for Pools. A strong challenge from Perch saw Molyneux writhing in pain, and the winger left the pitch in a leg brace and on a stretcher. Rhys Oates had a couple of chances on his return to Pools, but neither were anywhere near Killip's goal.

White had a golden chance at the end, but his finish just evaded the post and it ended all square.

Pools XI: Killip; Sterry, Byrne, Odusina, Ferguson; Morris (Shelton 79), Featherstone, Molyneux (White 53), Fletcher (Crawford 79), Grey; Bogle

Unused subs: Bilokapic, Liddle, Ogle, Smith
