Match report: Defeat for Pools

15 March 2022

Graeme Lee suffered his first home EFL defeat as Hartlepool United boss when Bradford City won 2-0 at the Suit Direct Stadium.

Pools, chasing their second double of the season, were undone by two goals inside seven second-half minutes, both via corners.

Matty Foulds got the first on 70 minutes after an away counter-attack following a home corner before Yan Singoo, who scored for Pools at Valley Parade earlier in the season with an OG, netted in front of the Bantams fans to seal the win for Mark Hughes’s team.

Lee made three changes from the side which drew 0-0 with Leyton Orient on Saturday, bringing Marcus Carver, Luke Molyneux and Martin Smith into his starting XI in place of Omar Bogle, Mark Shelton and Tom Crawford.

And Smith and Carver were involved in the first home opportunity in the 17th minute, ex-Sunderland midfielder Smith threading a lovely ball to the striker whose shot was well saved by Alex Bass.

There was a more difficult opening four minutes later, but this time Carver’s right-foot shot found the Bantams fans in the Rink End.

Pools were certainly a level above Saturday though Bradford looked lively enough themselves, no shock given they had won at Forest Green at the weekend.

They had a great opportunity of their own but the in-form Ben Killip pulled off a super save from Andy Cook’s header.

Pools began the second half with a spring in their step though the first chance fell to City, but Cook could only find the car-park behind the Rink End.

Molyneux loves attacking the Town End and he was at it on 53 minutes when his 25-yard drive stung the palms of Bass.

Alas, Pools tried an intricate move from the resulting corner which came to nought.

The hosts went even closer on the hour when Joe White struck the bar from outside the area with his left foot while he brought a save from the goalie with his right.

But Pools fell behind 20 minutes from time when the Bantams scored from a corner … a home one.

They counter-attacked with speed with Callum Cooke controlling the ball beautifully before finding Foulds who rolled in an equally impressive finish.

The Bantams doubled their advantage in the 76th minute from another corner, this time their own, Songoo flicking the ball past Killip.

Lee brought on Omar Bogle but not even the appearance of PFA Vertu Motors League Two Fans' Player of the Month for February, could inspire a comeback as Pools lost tamely in the end.
