Match Preview: Pools head to Wales

17 March 2022

Hartlepool United travel to Wales on Friday evening hoping to get back to winning ways sooner rather than later. A post-Papa John’s Trophy hangover has seen Pools fail to inspire in the last two games, and Graeme Lee’s side are desperate to put things right at Rodney Parade as they take on Newport County (7.45pm KO).

The Opposition
Newport are currently third in League Two, occupying the final automatic promotion place as it stands. They’ve won four of their last five games, defeating Carlisle, Stevenage, Bristol Rovers, and Tranmere, drawing with league leaders Forest Green in the other fixture.

Led by James Rowberry, the side features veteran midfielder Kevin Ellison, now in his twenty-third season of professional football, with five years of non-league football also preceding his professional career. Hartlepool-born Matty Dolan captains Newport, and the midfielder has spent two loan spells with Pools in 2013 and 2014 respectively.

The History
This is the 46th first-class fixture between the sides, and Newport have the history with them heading into the fixture. They’ve won 21 of the previous fixtures, Pools have won 11 games, and 13 matches have ended in a draw. The last clash between the sides was in November 2021 as Pools were defeated 2-1 at home.

Pools’ last victory over Newport came in 2015 when Scott Fenwick’s goal gave Ronnie Moore’s side a 1-0 win.

Team News
Graeme Lee rung the changes against Bradford, with Martin Smith, Marcus Carver, and Joe White all in from the beginning. The Gaffer has already confirmed that Shelton and Holohan are likely to miss the trip.
