Match Preview: Pre-season starts with Hibs in Portugal

27 June 2022

Paul Hartley takes charge of Hartlepool United for the first time as Pools and Hibernian go head to head in Portugal. After an influx of signings, Hartley should have plenty of options as he goes up against the Scottish Premiership side. 11AM kick-off.

The Opposition

Hibernian play in the Scottish Premiership and last season, they finished second in the bottom half of the second phase. Led by Lee Johnson, Hibs have confirmed their squad in Portugal will include new signings Lewis Miller and Jair Tavares, along with Paul Hanlon, Kyle Magennis, Demetri Mitchell, and Kevin Nisbet.

The History

The teams have met once before, in a pre-season friendly in 2005. Hibernian won 1-0 against a Pools side featuring current Pools coach Tony Sweeney, former assistant manager Michael Nelson, and regular co-commentator Adam Boyd.

Team News

Recent signings Jake Hastie, Euan Murray, Alex Lacey, Reghan Tumilty, and Kyle Letheren are all available for the fixture, alongside the signed-on players for the coming season. The friendly is likely to be an opportunity for Hartley to check out all the players at his disposal, with lots of substitutions expected.
