Match Preview: First up, Walsall!

29 July 2022

The preparations are done, the players are ready, and the stage is set - Hartlepool United return to League Two action this Saturday with a trip to Walsall (3pm KO).

The Opposition

Walsall finished one place above Pools last season with an identical set of wins, draws, and losses. 14 wins, 12 draws, and 20 losses kept the Saddlers safe and they’ll want to build on that 16th place finish this term.

They’ve invested in the squad in the summer, recently signing Timmy Abraham, brother of England and Roma forward Tammy, as well as experienced defender Peter Clarke and Middlesbrough-born forward Danny Johnson.

History

The sides have met 55 times in the past, with Pools victorious on 18 occasions. Walsall have won 19 of the previous fixtures and the remaining 18 have been draws.

Last season, the sides had one victory each. In August 2021, goals from Tyler Burey and Nicky Featherstone saw Pools win 2-0 at home, before Walsall won 3-1 in the reverse fixture.
