Match Preview: Quarter Finals!

24 January 2022

Following Saturday's 1-1 home draw with Stevenage, Hartlepool United turn their attention to the Papa John's Trophy on Tuesday evening (7pm KO) as they welcome Charlton Athletic to the Suit Direct Stadium. League One and Championship teams have become a speciality for Pools this season, and Graeme Lee's side will have no fear going up against the Addicks.

The Opposition

Charlton are currently 14th in League One, 10 points behind Plymouth in the play-off places. They've won two of their previous five games, defeating Fleetwood in the league and MK Dons in this competition. In that run, they were defeated by Crewe in the league, knocked out of the FA Cup by Premier League side Norwich City, and held to a draw by Cheltenham.

The side is led by Johnnie Johnson, a former Charlton player and player-manager. Assisted by former Jamaica international Jason Euell, Johnson oversees a side featuring Wales full-back Chris Gunter, Northern Ireland forward Conor Washington, and FA Cup-winning captain, Ben Watson.

The History

This will be just the eight meeting between the sides and the first since 2012. Pools have won just once against the Addicks, with Charlton winning five and one game ending in a draw. Last time out, Pools were defeated 3-2 after goals from Danny Hollands, Yann Kermogant, and Danny Haynes overcame strikes from Peter Hartley and Gary Liddle, then in his first spell with the club. Tony Sweeney played the full 90 minutes in the game, while regular co-commentator Adam Boyd was an unused substitute.

Team News

Jamie Sterry is once again available after serving his two-match suspension, with Graeme Lee left with plenty of headaches ahead of the clash. The trophy has thus far been used to experiment with the line-up, but a potential semi-final appearance may put paid to that.

Marcus Carver missed Saturday's game after a minor injury, and Lee will be hoping that the striker will be available for Tuesday.
