fter a perfect week in cup competitions, Hartlepool United once again turn their attention to the league as they travel to Bristol Rovers on Saturday (3pm KO). Victories over Bolton and Blackpool have given Pools the perfect platform to push towards the play-offs and they’ll be backed by a good following against the Gas.
Bristol Rovers currently sit in 18th place in League Two, and lost 2-1 to Peterborough in the FA Cup third round last time out.
Led by former Manchester City and QPR midfielder Joey Barton, the Gas side features former Stoke midfielder Glenn Whelan and one-time Pools loanee Harvey Saunders.
This will be the 25th meeting between the sides. In the past, Pools have won eight times, including earlier this season at when Jamie Sterry bagged his first goal in blue and white to give Dave Challinor’s side a 1-0 home win.
Pools fans will also remember the match against Rovers in May 2007. Knowing that a win would seal the League Two title, United took the lead through Joel Porter and led at half-time. However, goals from Richard Walker and former England striker Rickie Lambert saw Walsall pip Pools to the title.
Graeme Lee has a selection headache after the excellent showing from all those who featured in last week’s cup games. Joe Grey’s match-winning performance will see his hopes of a start boosted, while new signings Marcus Carver and Jake Hull will want to be involved as quickly as possible.
