Match report: First away win of the season!

9 December 2022

Hartlepool United claimed their first win on the road with a resolute 2-0 victory over Crawley Town. Rollin Menayese's first goal for the club and an own goal gave Pools the win in icy conditions.

In a first half that Pools controlled well, little happened in the way of chances. The returning Jamie Sterry had a go from distance, but the 'keeper got behind it. The cold conditions made keeping the ball difficult, but Pools looked comfortable on the ball and went into the break level.

After the restart, Pools kept their foot on the gas. Reghan Tumilty had an audacious attempt float narrowly wide after blocking a clearance, while Josh Umerah and Callum Cooke kept the pressure on Crawley's backline.

Pools first corner arrived in the second half, but they made it count. Cooke's cross found the head of Menayese, and the defender powered his header beyond the 'keeper to give Pools the lead.

The lead cemented Pools' grip on the game, and they doubled their lead with another set piece. Again, Cooke delivered the ball into the box, but it was a Crawley head that turned the ball into the net under pressure from Euan Murray.

Jamie Sterry came through the 90 minutes unscathed and Rollin Menayese's contribution will be further encouragement to Keith Curle after a testing couple of weeks. Pools' next game is with Newport on Saturday 17th December, and the manager will be desperate to carry this momentum into the festive period.

Pools XI: Killip; Sterry, Murray, Menayese, Ferguson, Tumilty; Sylla, Featherstone, Cooke (Hastie 90); Umerah (McDonald 77), Hamilton (Grey 60)

Subs: Letheren, Shelton, Missilou, Oduor
