Match Preview: Pools Head to Rochdale

26 December 2022

It's Boxing Day and Hartlepool United are set to take on Rochdale at the Crown Oil Arena (3pm KO). Pools have had an extended gap between fixtures due to a frozen pitch, and Keith Curle will hope that more time on the training pitch will pay dividends.

The Opposition

Rochdale are currently 21st in League Two, one place above Pools on goal difference. They've won four of their 20 games this season, with just one win in their previous seven league games.

Led by manager Jim Bentley, the Dale side features former Poolie Devante Rodney, best remembered for almost savings Pools from relegation with a brace against Doncaster Rovers in the 2016/17 season.

The History

This will be the 150th first-class meeting between the sides, with Pools winning 52 times, Rochdale winning 60 times, and 37 matches ending a draw. Last season, both teams registered a 2-1 win at home in the fixture. In December 2021, goals from Mark Cullen and Mark Shelton gave Pools the win, while the score was reversed in April 2022 despite a Bryn Morris strike.

Team News

A quieter treatment room has been good news for Keith Curle, though an illness has been sweeping through the club. Alex Lacey remains sidelined with his shoulder injury, but illness-aside, Curle has a near-full squad to choose from.
