Match report and post-match: Goalless at The Suit Direct

16 August 2022

HARTLEPOOL United collected their second point of the season when they drew 0-0 with Tranmere Rovers.

It was a second successive stalemate at the Suit Direct Stadium for Paul Hartley’s side who were applauded off by the 4,000-strong crowd.

Hartley made one change and a surprise one, given the man that was left out was Mo Sylla, unless he was feeling the effects of a full 90 on Saturday.

Wes McDonald was brought in for his debut and took his place on the left of a three-man front line with Jake Hastie on the right and Josh Umerah through the middle.

McDonald, signed from Morecambe, was lively from the off for the home side who won four corners in the first 13 minutes.

But Pools could not translate promise into goals.

Instead, Tranmere grew into the match but Elliott Levitt was weak and wide when he had a good sight at goal while Chris Merrie shot straight at Killip after a neat Tranmere passing move.

Jake Hastie had a gilt-edged opportunity to give Pools the lead when put through but he shot straight at Ross Doohan.

Hartley made a change at the break, bringing off Euan Murray and going to a back four, with Syllla coming into the midfield.

There was a cracking home chance in the 48th minute after a great jinking run by McDonald only for the new signing to fire wildly over the Town End bar.

It was not Levitt’s night either, the Rovers striker going well wide again with a half-decent opening.

Rovers introduced Josh Hawkes off the bench and the ex-Pools star brought a strong save from Killip (at his near post.

There was a highly-anticipated David Ferguson free-kick from very much in Fergie territory 10 minutes from time, but the full-back’s effort from just outside the box sadly floated harmlessly wide.
