A trip down memory lane: Bradford

19 August 2022

Hartlepool United take on Bradford City for the 89th time in the two clubs’ histories this Saturday. The previous 88 meetings have seen spoils shared for the large part with the Bantams boasting a minuscule lead of 34 wins to Pools’ 33 when it comes to the head to head record. Ahead of this weekend’s meeting, Jacob Hackett has picked out five memorable Hartlepool victories over the West-Yorkshire outfit.

Hartlepool United 2-0 Bradford City - 31st October 1992.

Almost 30 years ago, Pools stepped out at the Victoria Ground occupying a play-off spot, sat sixth in the Barclays League Division Two. Managed by Alan Murray, a Hartlepool side featuring the club’s eight highest appearance holder, Brian Honour, comfortably dispatched their visitors. Nicky Southall’s first half strike put Pools ahead before Paul Wratten doubled the advantage in the second half. Bradford went down to ten men shortly after Wratten’s strike as Murray’s men coasted to victory and moved up to third place.

Bradford City 0-2 Hartlepool United - 8th May 1993.

Hartlepool, now under Viv Busby’s reign, completed a double over the Bantams on the last day of the 1992/93 campaign by securing another 2-0 win, this time at Valley Parade. Scotsman John MacPhail put Pools ahead in the eighth minute, before substitute Paul Thompson made it two in the 66th. Three points on the road pushed Hartlepool from 18th place to a 16th placed finish in the division that season.

Hartlepool United 2-1 Bradford City - 7th August 2004.

The first victory on this list that is this side of the millennium came 18 years ago on the opening day of the 2004/05 Coca-Cola League One campaign. Neale Cooper’s Pools came from behind to beat the Bantams with a six minute flurry towards the end of the match. The first goal came through Bradford’s Dean Windass in the 54th minute to put the visitors ahead. Hartlepool were awarded a 75th minute penalty which Adam Boyd tucked away to level things up prior to Pools taking the lead through Hugh Robertson in the 81st minute to secure three points and a solid comeback.

Hartlepool 5-0 Bradford City - 3rd September 2013.

Pools’ largest win over Bradford came in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy at the beginning of the 2013/14 season. As if the 5-0 scoreline was not impressive enough, the Bantams were a League One outfit at the time whilst Hartlepool were in League Two! Luke James opened the scoring in the 25th minute to ensure a half-time lead for Colin Cooper’s side, but the second half is where things stepped up a notch. Jonathan Franks doubled the lead shortly after the break. Christian Burgess and Jack Compton then scored within three minutes of each other, the latter dispatching a penalty, to put Pools four ahead by the hour mark. Substitute Nialle Rodney rounded off the scoring in the 87th minute to dump the Bantams out of the cup!

Bradford City 1-3 Hartlepool United - 19th October 2021.

Perhaps the most memorable of the lot, Hartlepool registered their first away victory of their return season to the Football League against Bradford during the last campaign. Mark Cullen put Pools in front within the first minute before notching a brace in the 59th minute, giving Dave Challinor's men a two-goal cushion. The Bantams made it nervy for the travelling Poolies by halving the deficit through Paudie O’Connor with 72 minutes on the clock, but three points on the road were wrapped up for Hartlepool in injury time after Bradford’s Yann Songo’o put the ball into his own net to restore the two-goal lead.
