Match Preview: Pools head to Salford

15 October 2021

By Jordan Thornhill

After Saturday’s thrilling victory over Northampton Town, Hartlepool United travel to Salford City looking for kick-start their away form. Goals from David Ferguson and Luke Molyneux saw Pools defeat an impressive Cobblers side, and this momentum will be crucial against Gary Bowyer’s side.

The Opposition
Salford are currently 17th in League Two after a stop-start season. Three wins, three draws, and five losses see The Ammies sit five points and nine places below Pools going into Tuesday night’s fixture. Led by former Blackburn, Blackpool, and Bradford City manager Bowyer, Salford are backed by the Class of ’92 alumni Nicky Butt, Phil Neville, Gary Neville, and Paul Scholes, along with businessman Peter Lim.

The History
This will be just the 6th meeting between the sides, with one game ending in a draw, and the sides winning two games apiece previously. The last fixture between Pools and the Ammies saw the Manchester outfit win 2-0 in the FA Cup thanks to stoppage time goes from Andrade and Dieseruvwe. Pools midfielder Martin Smith and former Poolie Luke Armstrong were both on the bench for Salford in the fixture.

Team News
Pools are still likely to be without Gary Liddle. David Ferguson played and scored at the weekend, with the defence expected to be as-is on Tuesday evening. Joe Grey is also pressing for a first Football League start after an impressive cameo against Northampton.

Tyler Burey and Fela Olomola are also unavailable.
