Match preview: FA Cup weekend

5 November 2021

Hartlepool United are looking to make it two cup wins in a week as they host Wycombe Wanderers this weekend in the FA Cup. After overcoming Everton U23s in the Papa John’s Trophy on Tuesday, Tony Sweeney’s side welcome League One opposition hoping for a positive result.

The Opposition
Wycombe are flying high in League One, currently sitting fourth in the table. Nine wins already this season sees them just three points behind leaders, meaning they’ll head into this game with confidence and momentum.

Former Fulham ‘keeper David Stockdale plays between the sticks for Wycombe, while Abebayo Akinfenwa leads the line for the Chairboys. Manager Gareth Ainsworth remains at the helm after being relegated last term.

The History
This will be the 17th meeting between the sides, with Wycombe having the edge previously. Pools have won just four of the previous encounters, while Wycombe have won 10. Two games have ended in a draw. The last match between the sides saw Pools defeated 2-0 at home after goals from Akinfenwa and Paris Cowan-Hall.

Team News
This Saturday’s cup match gives Sweeney the chance to try out different players and tactics, with fringe players hoping to be involved. Tom Crawford and Martin Smith have been peripheral players so far this season, but both impressed against Everton during the week. Striking options include Joe Grey, Mark Cullen, Will Goodwin, and Luke Molyneux, though Fela Olomola and Tyler Burey once again miss out.
