Match preview: Pools head to Spennymoor

19 July 2021

After Saturday's comprehensive victory over Runcorn Linnets, Hartlepool United make the short journey to Spennymoor Town for their second pre-season fixture.

The Opposition

The Moors, led by former Poolie Tommy Miller, have played four pre-season fixtures so far, defeating Newton Aycliffe, Bishop Auckland, and West Auckland, a side featuring this week's commentary guest, Evan Horwood.

Spennymoor will play the 2021/22 season in the Vanarama National League North and their team features plenty of familiar names for Pools fans. Former skipper Carl Magnay is a mainstay in the Moors defence, while Joe Tait was a youth player and Jason Kennedy is still remembered for his last-minute winner against Yeovil Town. Assistant manager Stuart Parnaby also had a short spell with Pools in the 2014/15 season.

The History

The teams have met four times in the past, all in pre-season friendlies. Pools have won three of the matches, including most-recently in 2018 when Luke James scored the winner. Spennymoor won in 2016, while the 2015 and 2014 fixtures were both comfortable victories for Pools. Scorers in those matches included Jonathan Franks, Scott Fenwick, and Jake Carroll.

Team News

Dave Challinor will again use this fixture to check out a number of trialists alongside his confirmed players for the upcoming League Two campaign. New signings Reagan Ogle, Neill Byrne, and Martin Smith will be available, along with the core of the promotion-winning side, including Nicky Featherstone, Mark Shelton, Gavan Holohan, and Gary Liddle.
