Match report: Pools take all three points

9 February 2021

Dave Challinor's men claimed all three points in a convincing 2-0 win against Solihull Moors.

The first chance of the game fell to Solihull as Ward dragged wide after a ball over the top. However, Pools started to apply the pressure soon after with tireless pressure from Oates resulting in the first corner of the game. From the corner, Johnson's looping header was fired into the side-netting by the ever-dangerous Oates.

Two more corners followed before Pools found the breakthrough. As Solihull tried to play out from the back, the in-form Luke Armstrong struck the ball into the bottom corner after good pressure from the forward, Shelton, and Sterry.

Solihull worked to get back into the game and Gudger had a header wide before Pools started to turn the screw. First, David Ferguson had a shot deflected wide after a long run and cross from Armstrong before Johnson had a looping header float above the bar.

The visitors thought they had an equaliser after Rooney turned in Sbarra's cross but the linesman had already flagged for offside. Both teams continued to press, with Pools' forwards closing down everything in the Solihull final third and the visitors having a shot go high and wide.

Solihull started the second half stronger with Ryan Johnson having to be on guard to prevent Rooney from snatching an equaliser. Pools quickly regained the upper-hand as Ferguson's cross narrowly missed Armstrong and Oates has a shot blocked.

The second goal was inevitable and it came in spectacular circumstances. After Shelton was felled out on the right, Ferguson whipped the free-kick past Boot into the top corner. More excellent defending from Pools' back three followed with chances for Rooney and Ward snuffed out by Odusina, Cass, and Johnson.

Gary Liddle and Ryan Donaldson made returns from injury as Pools closed out the victory and climbed to second in the table ahead of their trip to Dagenham & Redbridge.
