Match preview: Sheff Wed- Papa Johns

1 December 2021

Hartlepool United are once again in Papa John's Trophy action as they travel to Sheffield Wednesday. After the appointment of Graeme Lee and Michael Nelson, Tony Sweeney takes charge of Pools in his final game as interim manager.

The Opposition

Wednesday are currently seventh in League One, claiming 33 points from their opening 20 games. In the Papa Johns Trophy, the West Yorkshire outfit finished top of their group and were one of the first teams qualified for this second round of matches.

Led by Darren Moore, the Sheffield Wednesday side features plenty of well-known names, including Northern Ireland goalkeeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell, former Chelsea enforcer Sam Hutchinson, and Burundi international Saido Berahino.

The History

This will be the 15th meeting between the sides, with a mixed history well documented by both sets of supporters. Adam Boyd's hat trick against Wednesday is still the stuff of legend, while Wednesday fans will remember the 2005 play-off final more fondly than the Poolies in Cardiff that day.

Team News

Jamie Sterry continues to serve his suspension after his red card, while Tyler Burey is a long-term absentee. Otherwise, Sweeney has a full squad to choose frorm. This competition has been dubbed The Maty Daly Trophy, with Pools fans hopeful of another match-winning performance from the playmaker.
