Match report: A monumental day at Wealdstone

17 April 2021

Pools stay top of the National League with what turned into an unbelievable 7-2 display.

The game started with Holohan being denied by Shelvey from close range as Pools dominated possession in the opening ten minutes.

The first of seven came after 26 minutes. Liddle with a great run into the Wealdstone half, finds a ball into the box for Oates who swivels and slots the ball bottom corner.

The second came five minutes before the break. Oates picked up the ball on the left hand side, dinked the ball into the box and that man Bennett was there to head home the second.

Just two minutes later, another long ball found Bennett in the box, his first strike was saved by Shelvey but the forward followed it in to get his second and Pools' third going into the break.

The second half started in similar fashion. 47 minutes in and another long ball was chested down by Bennett straight into the path of Oates who smashed it home to get his second and Pools' fourth.

Wealdstone finally attacked and on 58 minutes Ravas made a great flying save to dent Mendy getting one back.

Just four minutes later Pools had a penalty from a handball. Nicky Featherstone stepped up and made it five.

76 minutes gone and Shelton joined the party. The midfielder found the ball on the edge of the box and struck a sweet half volley into the bottom corner to make it six.

Pools made it seven in heaven on 80 minutes as Bennett was dragged down and the referee gave the penalty. Bennett stepped up to get his hattrick.

The last 5 minutes saw a great solo effort from Lo-Everton to pull one back and then Gendoh got a second with a effort in the top corner.
