Match report: Pools fall to defeat at home to Wrexham

17 November 2020

Hartlepool United fell to their second defeat of the season, once again at home, as Wrexham came out 1-0 winners.

It was a case of rued missed chances for Dave Challinor's men and it certainly did not help when after two minutes Mason Bloomfield was forced off with an ankle injury. David Parkhouse entered the action.

The first big chance of the game fell to Pools on 18 minutes as Holohan neatly found himself in some space on the right-hand side and his cross to the back post was met by Molyneux who looked certain to open the scoring but his effort was headed over.

The biggest moment of the game for Hartlepool came after 31 minutes, Molyneux beats the offside trap and runs down the left, making his way into the box his cross finds Crawford on the edge of the box who shoots straight at the keeper.

Hartlepool continued to attack and another big chance went begging as on 40 minutes, Molyneux once again attacked down the left, cut onto his right foot and his effort was agonisingly close as he hit the post.

Wrexham seemed like they were given a wake-up call during the break as they created the first chance of the second half. The ball fell to Durrell on the edge of the box but his effort was straight down the throat of Ravas to make an easy save.

On 54 minutes Hartlepool was made to pay for those missed chances as a long ball was headed down by Thomas and Durrell, who found himself with all the time in the world fired in from around 15 yards out to give the Red Dragons the lead.

In the closing stages, Pools started throwing caution to the wind and on 75 minutes, Ofosu did well to keep the ball and send through Molyneux, the winger flicks into Parkhouse and the striker shoots wide.

The last big chance of the game for Pools came on 85 minutes as Featherstone's corner goes in and there's a bit of a scramble, Magloire sticks a foot in and the ball almost squirms in. The Pools players claimed the ball crossed the line but the referee waved the appeals away.

A disappointing night for Pools as they concede their second defeat of the season and will look to bounce back as they head to Yeovil on Saturday.

Substitutes: Bloomfield off for Parkhouse, Donaldson for Oates, Crawford for Ofosu.

Yellow cards: Horsfield 28', Young 78'
