Moments Decide Games - Challinor

7 March 2020

Dave Challinor felt his side paid the penalty for not

finding a way of turning their dominance in to the opening goal as Ebbsfleet

United became the first side to win at The Vic since New Year's Day.

Gozie Ugwu's penalty 12 minutes from time proved the

difference during an ugly encounter but the Pools boss refused to be downbeat

despite the 1-0 defeat.

“Football is about moments and what we needed to do was getthat first goal,” he told Pools TV.

“They have come here to frustrate and will look at it as a

good away performance but I thought we wasted the first 25 minutes and didn't

put them under enough pressure.

“We had a decent spell either side of half time and I

suppose the key moment comes when Aidan has a free header in the middle of the

goal because if we get the first goal it potentially opens up.

“Things become more and more frustrating in terms of how the

game panned out so we're disappointed but we have to keep believing – because I

still absolutely believe.

“We'd love to have won today but we haven't so we have achance to put that right at Sutton.”

Challinor was shown a red card following the final whistle

as he went on to the pitch in an attempt to diffuse a situation in which

tempers had boiled over.

He confirmed his intention to appeal against the sending-off

and said it was much ado about nothing as he and visiting defender Ado Obileye

both saw red in the aftermath.

“I've had over 500 games as a player and 500 as a Managerand that's the first red card I've received.

“There was nothing in it – I am sure I would know and theplayer involved would know if we've headbutted each other and it wasn't that.

“I was trying to control the situation so I have already spoken to the referee about it and I will speak to all the relevant people and see what gets done about it.”
