I'm Gutted For The Players - Challinor

1 February 2020

Dave Challinor admitted his frustration after ten-man Pools'

2-1 defeat at Barnet and insisted that his side had done enough to have got

something out of the National League encounter.

Second half goals from Paul McCallum and Simeon Akinola did

the damage for the hosts, with Brnet defender Dan Sweeney's own goal in between

counting for nothing in the end.

The loss brought to an end Pools' recent run of four gamesunbeaten but Challinor was adamant the result was harsh on his players.

“I am really disappointed because I think we deserved somethingfrom the game,” Challinor told Pools TV.

“I am really frustrated for the players and at the players a

little bit too – naivety has ultimately cost us today but we've contributed an

awful lot and should take something from it.

“It was a rubbish pitch and horrible weather but if you're

going to be successful you have to get something from that game but we haven't

so we're disappointed.”

Perhaps the pivotal moment came two minutes in to the second

half when Gavan Holohan was shown a red card for a second bookable offence,

leaving Pools to play the rest of a scrappy affair a man light.

“Gavan has apologised in there – it's an honest mistake.

“Could you sense it happening? Yeah, because virtually every

foul was a yellow today. The red card affects things obviously because over a season

you can't win games with ten men.

“We've then conceded naively from a set-piece but then gotourselves back in it – and then conceded another from a second-phase set-piece.

“I am gutted for the players but we have to use it as motivationand as a learning tool.

“We have to bounce back, go and do everything we can this week and then be ready for next week to keep on moving forward.”
