Match report: Pools go out the FA Trophy on penalties

19 December 2020

It was a nightmare start to the game for Dave Challinor's men after some early possession from Halifax led to an attack down the left-hand side. Nepomuceno drove into the box and was taken down by Cass and the referee gave the penalty. Summerfield stepped up for the hosts on 12 minutes and slotted the ball past Ravas.

Just two minutes later Halifax once again attacked down the left-hand side as Nepomuceno drove inside this time and rifled a shot into the top corner which Ravas could do nothing about to make it 2-0 to the Shaymen after just 14 minutes.

Pools started to work their way back into the game with a spell of possession and after a ball was put into the box by MacDonald, Donaldson won the header which hit of the arm of Halifax defender Byrne and the referee pointed straight to the spot on 26 minutes.

 Luke Williams who

returned from injury, confidently picked the ball up and slotted it bottom

right corner to get Pools a goal back.

The second half started with a quick tempo and Pools were looking to equalise and on 71 minutes they were given a huge opportunity to do so. A Holohan shot was hit of the hand of King who was sent off and Pools were awarded a penalty. Featherstone stepped up and slotted away to make it 2-2.

Pools couldn't believe their luck as just two minutes later Halifax counter attacked up the pitch and new signing Billy Chadwick shot on the edge of box, past Ravas and into the bottom corner to make it 3-2 to the ten men.

This lively cup tie wouldn't stop just there as on 78 minutes

Holohan picked up the ball on the left hand side and swooped a right footed shot

into the top corner to get Pools level.

With 15 minutes left to play, Challinor's men threw everything at the Halifax defence. Goalkeeper Johnson pulled off two great saves to deny Armstrong and Donaldson in the last few moments to keep the score at 3-3 and send the tie to penalties.

Four penalties were taken each and with Halifax scoring all of theirs and Donaldson and Holohan missing for Pools, the Shaymen will go through to the next round. Pools will play Halifax on Boxing day and January 2nd.
