Antony Sweeney has admitted he can't wait to “roll back the
years” as he joins a team of Pools legends for a charity fundraiser next month organised
The 36-year-old will be reunited with former teammates such
as Micky Barron, Ritchie Humphreys, Chris Westwood, Mark Tinkler and Eifion
Williams at a star-studded event being staged at Seaton Carew FC.The Legends are set to take on a Fans XI at Hornby Park on Sunday 13th October (2pm kick-off) and it's hoped a bumper crowd can be attracted to raise funds which will be shared between the Trust and Pools' youth set-up.
“I'm really looking forward to it,” said Sweeney, who played444 times for Pools between 2002 and 2014.
“A high majority of the players involved have kept in
contact over the years but opportunities to actually all be in each other's
company are few and far between.“Getting an occasion like this when we can all come together
is going to be special and I can't wait to see everyone there and roll back the
years by getting out on the pitch with them.“I think a few of the lads have started trying to get themselves in to shape because we're hearing rumours that the fans team are being put through their paces.
“It will all be good fun and it's for a good cause too so hopefully there's a big crowd there and it will be a great game to watch.”
Sweeney remains on the staff at Victoria Park, combining a
role as First Team Coach with that of working alongside Ian McGuckin with the
Club's Youth Team. That means the former midfielder, who came through the Club's
Youth Development Programme himself, knows exactly how important funds raised
from the event are for the Club.“I will be able to see first-hand the benefits of the gameand monies raised,” he explained.
“On the youth side we have to be efficient and cost-effect
so if people are willing to come out and help us raise money then it will be
well-received and hopefully well spent.”Admission on the day is just £2 for adults and £1 forconcessions so make sure you head along to Seaton Carew on Sunday 13thOctober for what is certain to be a memorable afternoon.
