Pools have linked-up with East Durham College to launch a brand new Shadow Squad to work alongside our Youth Scholarship programme and provide education to the region’s young footballers.

The Club moved its training base to Peterlee last summer and the launch of this new project underlines the strength of the partnership with East Durham College.

The scheme will see EDC’s Shadow Squad members study at their Peterlee Campus, where they will be able to rub shoulders with Pools First Team and Youth Team players.

As well as that, the 16 to 19-year-olds who are involved will enjoy a range of other benefits, including:

  • Being regularly watched by Hartlepool United scouts
  • Up to eight hours of coaching a week from UEFA-qualified coaches including former Pools star Gus Di Lella and former Sunderland defender Darren Holloway
  • Regular reviews of Shadow Squad with potential of recruitment in to Pools Youth Team
  • Enjoying periodic coaching from Pools’ First Team Manager
  • The chance to play at The Super 6 Stadium
  • The course providing a pathway towards Pools’ First Team

The Shadow Squad are set to compete in the North East Colleges League and all players will also receive:

  • Training kit jointly branded by EDC and HUFC
  • A free Pools Season Ticket
  • Membership to EDC’s Impact Gym and Fitness Centre
  • Access to onsite physiotherapy
  • Free Arriva bus pass for travel to and from College

On completion of a chosen study programme, youngsters will also have progression routes towards University, as well as pathways in to professional or semi-professional football, USA Scholarships, coaching and a variety of jobs within the Sport and Leisure industry.
