Williams Can Be Best In Division - Hignett

Craig Hignett has insisted he has no doubts that the Club has made the right decision to stand by Luke Williams and has tipped the fit-again star to shine in the National League next season.

Craig Hignett has insisted he has no doubts that the Club has made the right decision to stand by Luke Williams and has tipped the fit-again star to shine in the National League next season.

Williams joined Pools permanently in August last year but saw his 2018/19 completely ruined by a knee injury which required two rounds of surgery.

However, the 25-year-old has worked hard to get back to fitness and has now put pen to paper on a new contract to keep him at The Super 6 Stadium in to next term.

Pools boss Hignett knows better than most how much potential and ability Williams possesses and he’s backing him to take the division by storm once he’s firing on all cylinders again.

“Luke had an awful time last year, through no real fault of his own,” Hignett explained.

“He’s desperate to play now, he knows the Club well and his talent is clear for everyone to see – we just need to get him right.

“I know for a fact that he’s worth sticking with because, when he’s fit and playing, he will be the best player in this league, without a shadow of a doubt.

“He will win us games. He is the type of player who turns you from an average team in to a really good team so to say we were frustrated last season is an understatement and he felt the same frustration as well.

“The Luke Williams of this world are the players that get you promoted with their extra quality – and he had that extra quality in the Championship so can you imagine if we get him right in this league?

“We all saw what he did when he was with us in League Two – some days it was embarrassing how good he was so that’s the level we need to get him back to.

“Luke will now be fit to start pre-season with us so we’ll build him up and make sure that he’s where we need him to be when the games come around.

“He’s definitely got the hunger and the desire because he’s missed it a lot – it’s been stop-start for him for the past two seasons really but he’s desperate to get back on the pitch.”
