Preview: Newton Aycliffe v Pools

9 July 2019

Pools are back in pre-season action on Tuesday evening when they make the trip to face Northern League outfit Newton Aycliffe at Moore Lane (7.30pm kick-off).

After some hard work on the training ground, Craig Hignett's men have made an encouraging start to their warm-up schedule, winning comfortably at Billingham Town and Shildon.

Now the Pools boss is looking for them to reproduce that same form again on Tuesday evening as he looks to give the majority of his squad more time on the pitch.

“It's all about the minutes at the moment and the players pushing themselves to get as much out of these games as they can,” Hignett explained.

“We've had two good performances and two good results so I want to try and keep that going because it's a nice way of building some momentum for the season.

“The lads have enjoyed it too, I think you can tell watching them play that they've had fun and they've bought in to everything we've been putting across to them in training.”

Keeper Ben Killip will be in the squad for the Newton Aycliffe game after his precautionary substitution at Shildon due to a head injury but teenager Brad Young is a likely starter between the sticks at Moore Lane.

Fraser Kerr has returned to full training after an ankle injury but Tuesday's game will come too soon, while Ryan Donaldson remains sidelined though he is on the brink of a comeback after calf trouble.

Luke Williams is keen to get some game time but the Club's medical staff are expected to keep him out of the firing line until at least the weekend.

Cash turnstiles will be in operation at Newton Aycliffe with admission prices fixed at £5 for adults and £3 for concessions.
