Pools Women’s Team were beaten by Chester-le-Street Town in the quarter-finals of the County Cup at Moor Par on Sunday.

Craig Devon’s side have enjoyed a good run in the competition once again but came up short against their higher division opponents despite an encouraging performance.

Pools came out of the traps quickly and got on the front foot for the majority of the first half, enjoying the lion’s share of possession against their hosts.

However, against the run of play, the home side stole in front on 40 minutes when a thunderbolt from 25 yards surprised the Pools defence and flew in to the top corner to make it 1-0.

Pools responded well after the break, continuing to probe for a way through a resolute and organised Chester defence which sat deep and soaked up the pressure.

As time ticked away, Pools pushed forward further looking for a leveller but a lapse in concentration in defence allowed the hosts to double their lead on 75 minutes.

That gave Devon’s side a mountain to climb and, as they threw caution to the wind, they were picked off on the counter-attack once again five minutes from time when Chester made it 3-0.

“The scoreline flattered Chester,” insisted Devon afterwards.

“We deserved to at least get our names on the scoresheet given the dominance we had at points in the game.

“It was great to see a vast improvement on the mindset throughout the game from all the girls, and I have to give a special mention to Sarah Rowbotham who ran the midfield for us.”
