Jenni Duffy-Smith scored the only goal of the game as Pools Women’s Team kicked-off 2019 with victory over Farsley Celtic on Sunday afternoon.
The influential defender pounced on ten minutes to find the net with what proved to be the decisive strike as Craig Devon’s high-flying outfit stayed second in the NERWFL Premier Division table.
The game - played at Grayfields - was always likely to be a tightly-contested affair, with both teams keen to hit the ground running upon their return from a Christmas break.
However, the key moment arrived early when Justine Robinson was felled on the edge of the area and Duffy-Smith got on the end of Alisha Smith’s free-kick to put Pools in front.
The visiting goalkeeper then had to produce a series of decent saves as Pools pressed for a second goal but the game remained locked at 1-0 going in to the half-time break.
It was a more end-to-end affair in the second half with Farsley Celtic offering a greater attacking threat and both sides playing some good football at times.
Pools were able to see things out though and claim a fourth successive win and keep some pressure on runaway leaders Durham Cestria.
“The girls showed a different side to them today,” Devon enthused afterwards.
“With tired legs and a constant onslaught, we remained together and gained the result as a team.
“It was a true show of grit and determination to keep hold of the lead and pick up another three points.”
