Pools Youth Team were held to a goalless draw in their top-of-the-table encounter against Grimsby Town at Blackhall on Saturday.
The Mariners arriving as leaders of the North East Division in the Youth Alliance League and they began the game on the front foot, pushing Pools back in the opening ten minutes.
However, some determined defending from Ian McGuckin’s youngsters helped them weather the early storm and they soon grew in to the game and began creating their own chances.
Josh Scott and Daniel Boyle both came close with low drives which both flew just wide, Brad Fox sent a couple of long-range efforts just off-target, while Coleby Shepherd drew a save from the Town keeper.
However, neither side had much in the way of clear cut opportunities and in the end they both had to settle for a share of the spoils at Welfare Park.
“After the first ten minutes we dominated in terms of possession really,” explained McGuckin.
“We had the majority of the ball for the rest of the game without really coming up any brilliant chances to score, we just lacked that little edge in the final third.
“Fair play to Grimsby though, they defended very well and made it difficult for us – it was a competitive game and we’ll take the point even though we could have had all three.”
