Pools got 2019 off to a good start with a 2-1 win over Gateshead at The Super 6 Stadium.
An early Liam Noble penalty was cancelled out by the visitors on the hour mark but Paddy McLaughlin quickly restored the lead as Richard Money's men started off the year with three points.
Pools started off this afternoon where they had finished things with Gateshead on Boxing Day at The International Stadium, with Liam Noble stepping up to take a spot kick.
Ryan Donaldson burst forward at pace only to be tripped as he pushed on into the box and, with the official close by, he pointed straight to the spot.
Noble stepped up to take the kick and made no mistake as he sent Mark Foden the wrong way to finish into the bottom left corner of the net.
The seventh-minute goal started off a lively first half from Pools, who showed plenty of attacking intent throughout.
Gateshead went closest to equalising on 20 minutes when Robbie Tinkler cracked a left-footed strike from distance at goal, which had everyone beat but bounced against the angle of the goal before Pools cleared out.
Luke James tried his luck from the edge of the box but his effort was held by Foden at his near post, while Josh Hawkes sent an effort from distance into the Gateshead fans behind the goal.
A dangerous cross in from Connor Thompson from the right almost caught Pools out but Scott Loach did well to claw the effort away as the ball looked to creep under the bar.
It was Pools who edged the first half here at The Super 6 Stadium, but Gateshead showed enough to suggest there would be more goals needed in this game to take victory.
And it was Gateshead who had the first chance of the second half as a cross from O’Donnell on the left was fired at goal by Steven Rigg. Scott Loach pulled off a great reaction save to block that effort but the rebound fell nicely for Scott Boden, who fired high over the bar from close range under pressure from Myles Anderson.
The visitors drew level on the hour mark as a freekick into the box from the right sailed through the area where Donaldson rose highest but saw his attempted clearance deflect past Loach and into the far corner of the net to make it 1-1.
Pools were back ahead though on 66 minutes as sub Paddy McLaughlin finished off a good move involving Noble, Muir and Kioso to slot the ball calmly past Foden to put his side 2-1 up.
Noble had done well to win the ball back in the middle of the pitch and he played it up for Muir who exchanged a quick pass with Kioso on the edge of the area before playing it forward for the former Gateshead man McLaughlin to skip through and score the goal.
Connor Thompson fired a volley over the bar from just inside the box as the visitors looked for just as quick a response to Pools’ goal.
The remainder of the game was lively, with both teams pushing forward where possible and, while there were no more goals this afternoon, Pools were good value for the New Year's Day win.
