Aaron Cunningham admitted that he couldn’t have dreamed of a better full debut for Pools after starring in Saturday’s brilliant 4-0 win at Boreham Wood.
The 21-year-old was branded “outstanding” by boss Craig Hignett following his performance during the emphatic triumph at Meadow Park on his first start for the Club.
Cunningham has had to fight back from serious ankle injuries and the disappointment of being harshly sent-off on his debut from the bench at the end of last term.
The modest youngster thanked all those who have stood by him during the testing times of the past and is hoping his display on Saturday can be the first of many impressive outings in a Pools shirt.
“To be honest, I don’t think it could have gone any better,” Cunningham told Pools PlayerHD.
“I felt calm because the lads and the gaffer got round me in the dressing room and I felt looked after before I had even got on the pitch.
“I found out in the hotel this morning that I was playing but obviously with the injuries we’ve had and the fact we like to play with three at the back it had crept in to my mind that I could be starting!
“I need to thank everyone at the Club. I have put the work in but I have been guided throughout the years by Craig, Phil, James and all the Managers have all got round me and helped me massively.”
