Robinson Scores Four In Women's Team Win

21 April 2019

Justine Robinson smashed four goals as Pools Women's Team moved closer to securing runners-up spot in the NERWFL Premier Division by thrashing Wallsend at The Super 6 Stadium on Sunday.

The result rarely looked in doubt as around 300 fans enjoyed an entertaining encounter, which was dominated by Jonathan Gibbon-Hayes' side pretty much from start to finish.

Pools shook off a few nerves in the opening minutes to begin dominating possession against their hosts and it wasn't long before they were looking a real threat going forward.

Caitlin Bates escaped down the right to feed a low ball across the six-yard box which was just about dealt with, while Justine Robinson barged her way in to a shooting position on the left only to fire too high.

Wallsend were unable to get out of their own half in the opening stages and Robinson drew another tidy save from visiting keeper Holly Jenkins on 5 minutes after brilliant work from Bates on the wing.

Jenni Duffy-Smith hit a low shot on goal which was brilliantly tipped away by an overworked Jenkins, before the keeper was in the right place again on 10 minutes to deny Bates after she had raced through on goal.

However, the pressure finally told a couple of minutes later when Duffy-Smith found the time and space to let fly with a low drive from 25 yards which flew in off the inside of the left-hand post to make it 1-0.

The chances didn't arrive with such regularity in the minutes after the opening goal but Bates did come close to making it 2-0 but this time her volley crashed back off the outside of the post.

Bates' movement was causing all kinds of problems for the visiting defence though and she had another opportunity to score when she got to the ball before the keeper but sent her left-foot shot over on the turn.

The second goal did arrive just before the half-hour when Duffy-Smith's floating free-kick was brilliantly headed up and over the keeper and in to the corner of the net by Robinson.

Pools made it 3-0 just before half-time when Duffy-Smith slipped in to the area from the right and fired a shot on goal which was parried by the keeper, only for Robinson to convert coolly from the rebound.

While that finish was routine, the goal which saw Robinson complete her hat-trick was a stunner. Picking the ball up from Portas thirty yards out, she took a touch inside from the left and let fly with a thunderbolt right in to the top left corner of the net.

A quiet start to the second half was put behind Pools just before the hour when Sarah Rowbotham nodded home from Duffy-Smith's inswinging left-wing corner to make it 5-0.

And just a minute later Robinson scored her fourth and Pools' sixth of the afternoon when she powered in behind before unleashing an unstoppable left-foot finish past the keeper.

Wallsend kept plugging away and got their reward on 65 minutes when Samantha Deverdics – the sister of former Pools star Nicky – burst through on goal to pull one back for the visitors.

It didn't seem to knock Pools out of their rhythm much though and Robinson almost made it 7-1 after trading passes with Bates, before substitute Laura Wilson smashed another shot just over.

Kate Hampson looked as though she had added to the scoring when she met a cross from the right but he goalbound header was brilliantly cleared off the line by a Wallsend defender.

Pools keeper Campbell had to make a couple of decent saves as the Tynesiders continued to provide a bit of a threat on the counter-attack.

It was 7-1 to Pools with seven minutes left when Lottie Portas' scooped through-ball totally deceived the keeper, bouncing over her head and in to the net.

Bates still couldn't find the goal that she deserved but she did sting the keeper's hands with another effort on target after turning skilfully in to space on the edge of the area.
