Pools Youth Team returned to winning ways on Saturday with a strong performance during a 3-1 triumph over Notts County in the Youth Alliance League at Blackhall.
Ian McGuckin’s youngsters were left frustrated following last weekend’s defeat at Rotherham United but roared back to form against The Magpies as Josh Scott, Coleby Shepherd and Brad Fox all hit the net.
Pools began the game strongly and could have gone in front when Danny Boyle’s header from six yards out was well saved by the County keeper.
However, on six minutes it was 1-0. Good play by Fox fed Jack Leonard through and he drove towards goal before unselfishly squaring the ball across for Scott who tapped home from close range.
Pools were on the front foot for the majority of the first half but had to wait until the 34th minute to double their lead; Shepherd picked the ball up on the edge of the area and jinked around four defenders before producing a smart finish in to the bottom corner for an excellent solo goal.
McGuckin’s side made most of the running at the start of the second half too but, as they pushed forward, they left space at the back and Notts County counter-attacked swiftly to score and make it 2-1.
The game was back in the balance at that point and both sides had further opportunities to score before Fox settled the nerves and clinched the victory for Pools five minutes from time when he fired in from seven yards after Aaron Willoughby’s shot had been blocked.
“It was a very good result for us – we looked a different team to last week,” enthused McGuckin.
“We looked strong from the off and had numerous chances so really we could have won the game by a bigger margin had we been a bit more clinical.
“We controlled the game for the most part and deserved the win so hopefully we can just carry that on now and finish the season really positively.”
The win leaves Pools four points behind leaders Doncaster Rovers in the North East Division of the Youth Alliance League.
