Pools Youth Team kept pace at the top of the Youth Alliance League table at the weekend with a convincing 3-0 win over Oldham Athletic at Welfare Park in Blackhall.
The youngsters went in to the game sitting fourth in the table having lost just once in their opening four games and they produced another strong display to see off The Latics on Saturday.
Ian McGuckin’s men were ahead on 17 minutes when Liam Pritchard sent a deep cross to the far post where Conner Rennison was able to nod it back across goal for Josh Scott to head home.
It got better for Pools on the half-hour when Rennison’s dangerous delivery from a corner found Oliver Thompson who met it with a clean header to make it 2-0.
Pools continued to press for more goals but had to wait until ten minutes from time to add a third when substitute Brad Fox pressured the visiting defender in to giving up possession before producing a neat finish for 3-0.
“It was a really positive performance,” McGuckin told us.
“We wanted to build on the last game against Tranmere with another clean sheet but we also needed a cutting edge and for the lads to be more ruthless so fair play to them for doing everything we asked of them.
“It was a really solid display in and out of possession; we dominated the game and controlled possession which meant we limited Oldham’s chances and never really looked in danger.
“It was a difficult game for us, full of incident and there were a few yellow cards flashed about but the lads kept to their tasks and got the three points.”
